They always shut down the path when this happens, so check ahead. Whether you’re looking to hit the slopes, soak in the mineral hot springs, climb the canyon walls, or hike to one of Colorado’s most famous destinations, it all awaits you in Glenwood Springs. High runoff from the snowmelt will often overflow the banks and cover stretches of the bike path. Check before you go, especially in the spring. Sun block, skeeter repellent, sunglasses, layers to accommodate the changing Colorado weather are advisable. I've never come across, nor heard of a rattler here, so don't panic. In summer, on rare occasions you will see a bull snake or garter snake. This path follows the river, but also spends much of it's time along the Interstate, so there is some vehicle noise and the smell of diesel. (BTW, this is a great way to avoid the parking issues at Hanging Lake trailhead) In the springtime, the high alpine snow is melting, so the river is roaring and some stretches are rather spectacular with thundering whitewater. Stop, lock up your bike, and hike the Grizzly Creek Trail or Hanging Lake Trail. In-line skaters are an endangered species, so be kind and respectful of their space and do not harass or try to feed them. On the path or in the river, you'll see other bikers, skate boarders, hikers, kayakers, rafters and an occasional in-line skater. Between Glenwood Springs and No Name, look up and scan the hillside to your left to hopefully catch a glimpse.
Often, there are bighorn sheep along the side of the trail at the Glenwood Springs end of the canyon. Race the route for exercise, or lollygag and take lunch if you're looking for a more leisurely experience. Gorgeous views of Glenwood Canyon and plenty of opportunity for photos. Restrooms at Grizzly Creek rest area, Hanging Lake trailhead, Behr Ranch rest area, and both ends of the trail. Uphill (mostly) heading east, downhill (mostly) heading west. Easy grade most of the way on paved path. At the end, both of my kids said they would have liked the chance to paddle more but they both loved it and would do it again. Even though the water was very cold, it felt good as it was 95 that day. We also had a chance to stand on the nose of the boat while our guide spun the boat throwing us off into the cold water. My 11 year old son was smiling ear to ear through the rapids - that alone was worth the entire trip! The last 2/3 of the trip is mostly floating though we did "ride the bull" (sit at the nose) through some small rapids. The first 1/3 of the rafting is the class III rapids so the excitement is all at the beginning. We were all so glad we went as it turned out to be a highlight of our entire Colorado vacation. My 13 year old daughter was very nervous about the class III rapids so we almost skipped the rafting trip. My family of four (kids ages 11 & 13) went on the half day trip.
